Ethernet First Mile - EFM |
First and last!
Businesses that have previously needed a guaranteed service level with balanced up and download speeds, for connecting to remote services or high quality VoIP have opted for Symmetric Digital Subscriber Lines (SDSL). However such lines are limited to a balanced 2MB bandwidth.
Ethernet First Mile is the term applied to the provision of Ethernet direct to the customer in the access and delivery network. With EFM, the upper limit on bandwidth has increased to 10MB giving customers far greater flexibility.
Traditionally if you needed a high speed, high quality data connection, a fibre based leased line was probably the best choice. Now with EFM you can receive fibre network quality at a fraction of the cost. EFM uses bonded copper pairs rather than fibre which means that it is cheaper to provide, quicker to install and very reliable.
Ethernet Speeds
As EFM is provided using copper, distance from the exchange is a factor, but services can be provided at 2,4,6,8,10MBps. EFM currently covers over 60% of UK businesses so if you need fast, reliable, cost effective access to remote data services or even network your multi-site organisation.
