Sun Virtual Infrastructure

Sun Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI)

Sun VDI Software creates a new dimension of choice to simplify management, increase flexibility and maximize IT utilization for desktop deployments. Its open architecture allows IT to design a virtual desktop environment using a broad range of client device, virtualization hosts and virtual desktop operating systems.

Sun VDI characteristics:

  • Provides virtual desktop access, brokering, and hosting services
  • Includes built-in virtual desktop hosting or integrates with Microsoft Hyper-V and VMware
  • Supports Windows, OpenSolaris, SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop, and Ubuntu virtual desktops
  • Brings Single-On functionality to the organization with no additional complexity or expense
  • Allows Windows Server Remote Desktop Services to be used side by side with VDI desktops
  • Use existing PCs, Macs and thin clients, or step up to Sun Ray thin clients
  • Reduces VDI storage consumption by integrating with Sun Open Storage

Key benefits:

  • Sun VDI is the most cost effective means of achieving desktop virtualization
  • Large cost savings across hardware plus IT staff costs due to improved administration and operational efficiencies
  • Technology is open standard, so no lock in - it can be bolted onto other virtualization technologies (Citrix, Vmware etc) at deployment or at a later point if required, plus use existing PCs, Macs and thin clients
  • Best over network performance with up to 240ms round trip delay tolerance (doubling some other vendors thresholds)
  • Improved protection from security breaches
  • Reduces VDI storage consumption by integrating with Sun Open Storage

Sun Ray Thin Client

Sun Ray virtual display clients deliver an interoperable desktop computing solution that reduces the maintenance, upgrade, and operational costs of most desktop environments.

Within Sun's range sits the small form factor Sun Ray 2, which is particularly well suited for cost-sensitive applications and environments such as call centers, education, healthcare, service providers, finance - yet provides low entry costs for business enhancing features such as Single-Sign-On. It's typical power consumption is only 4 watts (about 5 percent of a typical PC) to reduce energy costs and attain carbon neutrality.

Sun Ray Thin Client key features and benefits:

  • Manage thousands of desktops with just a few administrators
  • Low power consumption
  • Virtually eliminate the cost of client virus attacks
  • Centralize data and applications for greater security
  • Cut application upgrade time from weeks to hours
  • Hot Desk between office, conference room, and home
  • Enable Two-factor Single Sign-On functionality with nominal entry cost
